
WINIFRED 11 JANUARY 1901
Winifred was born 11th January, 1901 in Farina. She was educated at Farina until she came to Adelaide and boarded at Miss Dow’s School for Young Ladies (Yoothamurra) in Glenelg.
She married Gordon William Spry on the 17th April, 1920 at St Colombus Church at Hawthorn. They moved to Sydney and she left him after two years. They divorced in 1928, and had no children.
Winifred worked in Sydney in a boot polish factory for about six months, then worked as a domestic for a Jewish family for about six months.
Then came back to Adelaide at about 22. Started training to be a nurse at the Children’s Hospital at 23 years of age. Then went back to Sydney to do her Midwifery. Did her adult nursing at the Wakefield Street Hospital. Worked in the Northern Territory for over one year in 1942, during the War.
Worked in Sale for about 14 years, becoming the Matron. Finally finished her career in Berri as the Matron for four years.
Winifred lived at St Peters, before moving to the Walkerville Nursing Home.
Winifred Spry died 8th June, 1987, in Adelaide.
