FRED JOHN WEST 8 JANUARY 1903

Fred was born 8th January, 1903 in Farina. All the children were sent away to school.  Every year Lillian brought the family by train to Adelaide during the hottest months, although all the children except Kathleen were born during December, January and February.  They left Farina in 1919 when Colin was six.  When they lived at Farina there was a population of 133 and 29 dwellings.  No Afghan or Aborigines were counted.


Fred was educated at Queen’s College, Barton Terrace in North Adelaide.  Fred studied at the School of Mines: Chemistry and Metallurgy.  He was employed at Bickfords in the Chemist department when he met Helen.


They were married at the Prospect Methodist Church on the 25th May, 1930.  Helen’s family lived in Richman Avenue, Prospect at that time.  Helen was 25 years old and Fred was 27 years old.  They honeymooned in Melbourne.  Their first home was at 14 McInnes Avenue, Broadview and then in 1945 the family moved to 7 Richman Avenue, Prospect.  In 1952 when Lillie died and Helen and Fred built a home at 49 Woodworth Street, Blackwood. 

Fred and Helen bought another home in Balfour Street, Nailsworth in 1957 and then in 1969 moved into a retirement unit at Second Avenue, St Peters.  Helen lived there until December 1994 and when she was unable to care for herself she went to Walkerville Nursing Home

She died on 9th October, 1997, aged 92.  Fred died on the 14th February, 1983, aged 80.  He was cremated on Ash Wednesday and his ashes are scattered on the Olympic Sports Field, Kensington Park, where he spent so much of his time as an official of the Amateur Sports Association.  Helen is buried at Dudley Park Cemetery with Kathleen Helen.
